Glencoe, Skye & Harris: Light, Landscape & Astro Photography October 2028
This is more than a workshop — it is your journey through Scotland’s most breathtaking landscapes, timed for the darkest skies and best Northern Lights potential of the year.
We travel north together from Glasgow. Our first base is in the Glencoe area, perfectly placed to explore iconic glens and mountain passes. From there we head to the Isle of Skye, where jagged volcanic peaks pierce cloud-drenched horizons, turquoise bays curve beside ancient stone, and night skies deepen as the moon wanes. Finally we cross to Harris and Lewis for five full days on the Atlantic edge — endless white-sand beaches, flower-rich machair, standing stones older than history, and some of the darkest skies in Britain.
Our route is guided by the light and the weather. We do not follow a rigid schedule — instead we adapt each day to wherever conditions are most promising. We rise before dawn for first light. We linger through golden hour and blue hour. We stay late when skies are clear, watching the Milky Way arch over the horizon and keeping watch for the aurora. If the forecast changes, we change with it — always ready to shift course to find the best light, the clearest skies, and the most atmospheric conditions.
This is photography on Scotland’s wild western edge — elemental, ever-changing, deeply rewarding. Expect misty glens, windswept cliffs, beaches that glow at low tide, and moments so striking you will reach for your camera before you even think. This is your adventure — to see, to learn, to capture, and to carry home images that tell the story of Scotland’s wild heart and island frontier.
Dates & Meeting Arrangements
We meet in Glasgow on the morning of Saturday 19 October 2028. Exact station meeting point and time will be confirmed four weeks before departure.
We depart after breakfast on Wednesday 31 October 2028.Back to Glasgow train station.
The new moon falls on Thursday 27 October 2028, placing our darkest nights — and our best aurora and Milky Way opportunities — right at the centre of our Harris and Lewis stay.
Aurora sightings are never guaranteed — they depend on solar activity and clear skies — but late October brings us to the ideal latitude under dark skies. We monitor forecasts constantly and move locations to chase clear skies and activity wherever possible. Nature decides what appears — but we will be ready whenever she is.
Where We Stay
Nights 1 and 2 — Glencoe area. Private single rooms.
Nights 3 through 7 — Isle of Skye. Private single rooms.
Nights 8 through 12 — Harris and Lewis. We stay in two separate houses. Larger properties big enough to accommodate the whole group with private rooms are not available in the Outer Hebrides due to its remoteness. By using two smaller houses, every participant has their own private room, and we remain based in prime dark-sky locations close to the coast and away from light pollution.

Who This Is For
This expedition is for photographers who want to grow — and explore under some of the darkest skies in Europe.
You shoot with a DSLR, mirrorless, or advanced compact camera and know your basic controls, and you are ready to move beyond auto and unlock full creative control. You love landscape and astro photography, or have always dreamed of mastering them, and capturing the Northern Lights is something you have always wanted to do. You prefer hands-on field guidance over classroom theory. You value travelling with a small, like-minded group, and you are drawn to wild, dramatic places where getting up early, staying out late, and walking a little further is all part of the experience.
All skill levels are welcome — from keen beginners building confidence to intermediate photographers refining composition, low-light technique, and methods for capturing fast-moving aurora.
Fitness & Terrain
This journey rewards those who move — but you do not need to be a mountain climber to join.
Most shooting locations are reached by walks of one to four miles round trip, on paths that may be uneven, stony, grassy, or moderately steep in places. On Harris and Lewis walks are generally shorter or flatter, though ground can be soft, boggy, or uneven in more remote areas.
Many sessions start or finish in the dark, so sure-footedness and sturdy footwear are essential. You should be comfortable being on your feet for several hours each day, and prepared for wind, rain, sunshine, and mist — sometimes all within a single day. There are no extreme climbs or exposed scrambling on our planned routes. A reasonable level of general fitness and a willingness to be outdoors in all weather is all you need.
If you have specific mobility considerations, please discuss them with us before booking, and we will do everything we can to support you.
Important Notes
Weather in the Highlands and Islands changes rapidly — conditions can shift through every season in the space of a few hours. Packing for all conditions is essential.
