Meet Your Leaders: Simon Waldram & Mike McMahon

This workshop is led by Simon Waldram – known for emotionally resonant landscape photography and a teaching style focused on creative growth and deep connection to place – alongside collaborator Mike McMahon, an award-winning drone photographer celebrated for exceptional aerial vision, technical mastery, and ability to capture breathtaking perspectives. Between us, we bring decades of combined experience, unique creative viewpoints, and a shared passion for helping you create meaningful, powerful images – whether working from the ground or from the sky. We will be with you every step of the way, sharing our knowledge, guiding your creative choices, and helping you make the very most of every location and light condition.

What You’ll Experience

This is far more than a standard photo tour – it is an immersive, field-based workshop crafted to deepen your connection with the landscape and refine your entire creative process. You will journey through some of the Faroe Islands’ most dramatic and breathtaking locations, capturing unforgettable scenes from every angle:

  • Gásadalur: A remote, picturesque village where a majestic waterfall tumbles directly into the wild Atlantic Ocean
  • Tjørnuvík: A striking black-sand beach, looking out toward the legendary sea stacks of Risin og Kellingin – the Giant and the Witch
  • Saksun: A serene valley dotted with traditional turf-roofed cottages, set beside calm, reflective waters perfect for timeless compositions
  • Kallur Lighthouse: Perched on dramatic cliff edges, reached by ferry and a scenic hike – offering sweeping, high-altitude views
  • Drangarnir Sea Arch: An exclusive boat trip to photograph one of the archipelago’s most iconic and dramatic natural landmarks
  • Remote ridges and mountain passes: For moments of solitude, vast scale, and the ever-changing beauty of Faroese weather

When the skies clear, we will take advantage of the dark North Atlantic nights to shoot the Milky Way, the aurora borealis, and meteor trails. This is not a dedicated astrophotography workshop – instead, we focus on readiness, adaptability, and the thrill of creating powerful images from whatever conditions the land and sky present. With both ground and aerial perspectives in mind, you will learn how to capture the full story of this remarkable landscape.

What You’ll Learn

With personalised guidance from both Simon and Mike, you will build both technical mastery and creative confidence, covering:

  • Advanced composition and exposure techniques tailored to dramatic, changing landscapes and low-light environments
  • Bracketing and blending methods to master dynamic range and craft atmosphere-filled images
  • Drone photography (led by Mike): Legal compliance, safe operation, planning aerial shots, and creating award-worthy, story-driven aerial imagery
  • Creative decision-making and working confidently in unpredictable weather and light conditions
  • Moving beyond capturing scenes to creating photographs – whether ground-based or aerial – that carry meaning, emotion, and narrative

All instruction is fully adaptive – we tailor every session to your individual goals, your gear, and your level of experience, so you progress at the pace that suits you best.
