This is not a rigid schedule—it is your passport to the finest dark-sky experience in the American Southwest. We chase light, composition, and pure inspiration, never the clock. This is simply the premier astro-landscape workshop available, set within two of the most spectacular national parks on Earth, where darkness is deep, skies are clear, and every horizon is built for the stars.
Arrive in Moab and settle into your surroundings. On our first evening together, we gather to break down night photography essentials: precise settings, confident focusing, and working with subtle, shifting light. Then we head straight for Dead Horse Point. We watch the sun gild the canyon walls and turn the Colorado River to gold, lingering as darkness deepens and the stars spill across the sky in breathtaking clarity. There is no rush, no required list of shots—only the chance to find your rhythm, work at your own pace, and shoot until you are ready to call it a night.
From there we let the moon and weather guide our path. Mornings are yours to rest, explore nearby trails, or review images and refine techniques freely. Afternoons we dive deeper: master PhotoPills to plan the galaxy’s appearance at any location and hour, learn to draw every detail from your files in post-processing, and exchange ideas and progress in an open, collaborative setting. Then we venture out into Arches National Park, where the world’s most extraordinary sandstone formations stand beneath some of the darkest, clearest skies on the continent. We begin at Balanced Rock, its dramatic silhouette rising against the southern sky, then move to Double Arch, where twin spans frame the galactic core like a cathedral window built by nature itself. Later we work The Windows Section, where natural arches align perfectly to reveal the Milky Way stretching unbroken from horizon to horizon. We wander, experiment, reposition, and stay as long as the scene holds its magic—because here, the sky is not just visible, it is unforgettable.
Our peak comes on the darkest night—new moon, June 22—when the galaxy burns brightest. We hike together to Delicate Arch, the most graceful free-standing arch on the planet, then spread out to capture the moment in your own way: a sweeping arch of the Milky Way following the curve of stone, sharp vivid deep-sky stars above the distant La Sal Mountains, or smooth luminous star trails circling overhead. No two images will look the same, and that is exactly the point. Under these pristine skies, every composition becomes something rare and extraordinary.
We then turn our focus to Canyonlands National Park, where vast horizons meet unobscured darkness. From the rim at Mesa Arch, we watch the galaxy hang brilliant above the canyon depths, then move to Grand View Point, where endless layers of red rock stretch out beneath an endless canopy of stars. There is no light pollution here, no haze—only pure, vivid darkness that reveals the universe in stunning detail. We find quiet viewpoints, paint the stone gently with light, and stay until the sky begins to pale toward dawn.
On our final nights we revisit favorite locations or explore quieter spots such as Landscape Arch in Arches, or Shafer Canyon Overlook in Canyonlands—places where the sky opens wide and the landscape offers fresh possibilities at every turn. WHO THIS IS FOR
Landscape and night-sky photographers ready to deepen their craft beneath some of the darkest skies in the continental United States. Open to enthusiastic beginners through intermediate practitioners; you should understand basic camera operation and come eager to learn. We balance expert guidance with true creative freedom, adapting every coaching moment to your pace and style. If you seek the very best locations paired with unmatched tuition in celestial planning, field technique, and post-processing, this is the workshop built for you. It is not suited to those preferring a rigid timetable or classroom-only instruction.
FITNESS LEVEL
Moderate. You should be comfortable walking up to three miles round trip with around 500 feet of elevation gain over exposed, uneven slickrock—including a steady uphill section and a narrow ledge near the end of the Delicate Arch hike. Terrain is generally non-technical but offers no shade. Most evenings involve short to moderate walks while carrying photography gear, and some routes cross rocky paths and unpaved roads at approximately 5,000 feet elevation. Alternative viewpoints and less strenuous routes are available at all locations for anyone who prefers them.
