A Beginner's Astrophotography Adventure on the Yorkshire Coast
One evening. One spectacular coastline. A sky full of stars.
Have you ever looked up at a clear night sky and wished you could photograph it properly?
Perhaps you've tried before and ended up with a blurry image, a completely black photograph or something that looked nothing like what you saw with your own eyes.
Join me for a special evening of beginner astrophotography around Flamborough on the spectacular Yorkshire coast, where I'll show you how to capture the stars, night sky and landscape with your own camera.
This is a relaxed, hands-on workshop designed specifically for beginners. You don't need previous astrophotography experience and you don't need expensive specialist equipment.
I'll take you through everything step by step before we head out into the darkness and start photographing.
Workshop Dates
2nd–16th November 2026
This is a one-night astrophotography workshop, with the exact evening selected within this period according to the weather and night-sky conditions.
I'm keeping the date flexible so we have the best possible chance of getting clear skies at Flamborough.
The workshop will take place on the best available night within this date window.
If conditions are unsuitable throughout the available period, an alternative date will be offered.

What you'll learn
During the evening I'll show you how to:
Set up your camera for astrophotography
Choose the right aperture, shutter speed and ISO
Focus accurately on the stars in complete darkness
Choose the best lens for night photography
Photograph sharp stars and, when conditions allow, the Milky Way
Use the coastline and landscape to create more interesting compositions
Avoid the most common beginner mistakes
Understand how weather, moonlight and darkness affect your photographs
By the end of the evening you'll understand the basic techniques needed to continue photographing the night sky yourself.
Flamborough after dark
Flamborough is transformed after sunset.
The cliffs, coastline and sea become dramatic foregrounds beneath the night sky, giving us the opportunity to create much more than simple photographs of stars.
We'll explore carefully selected locations around Flamborough and look for compositions that bring the landscape and night sky together.
Depending on the season, moon phase and conditions, we may photograph the Milky Way, stars above the coastline, star trails or atmospheric night landscapes.
Every night is different, and that's part of the adventure.
I'll be with you throughout the evening, helping you with your individual camera, settings and compositions so you can concentrate on getting the photographs you came for.
What you'll need
You don't need expensive specialist equipment to join this workshop.
Bring:
A DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual controls
A reasonably wide-angle lens
A sturdy tripod
Fully charged batteries
A memory card with plenty of space
A head torch or small torch, preferably with a red-light setting
Warm clothing and suitable footwear

Weather
Astrophotography is completely dependent on the weather and night-sky conditions.
If conditions make the workshop impossible, an alternative date will be offered.
Clear skies can never be guaranteed, but I'll always do my best to make the evening a worthwhile and enjoyable experience.

I've been running photography workshops since 1999, helping photographers of all abilities learn how to get more from their cameras and develop their own style.
For this Flamborough workshop, I'll be working with you throughout the evening rather than simply demonstrating from a distance. I'll help you with your own camera, your own lens and your own settings, so you leave understanding exactly how to photograph the night sky yourself.
Astrophotography doesn't have to be complicated. I'll keep things relaxed and easy to understand, without unnecessary technical jargon, and I'll explain not just what settings to use, but why you're using them.
With a maximum of just six people, there's plenty of time for individual help and questions.
Most importantly, this is about giving you the confidence to go out on your own after the workshop and know what you're doing.
My aim is simple: to get you excited about photographing the night sky and give you the skills to keep doing it long after our evening in Flamborough has finished.
